The purpose of cutting rings is to assure a firm bond between the tube and the coupling. This safe and reliable assembly is obtained by a specific configuration of the cutting ring.
When the nut is being tightened, the ring meets with the internal coupling cone and is distorted, thereby cutting into the tube at points A & B as shown below.
