As reported by Power & Motion in their article Braided Hydraulic Hose Meets High Pressure Needs of Electric Backhoe spiral hydraulic hoses are commonly used on mobile equipment due to their ability to handle high pressures. However, when a major OEM was developing its next-generation electric backhoe loader, it found that traditional high-pressure components didn’t provide the required performance.

The OEM initially requested SAE 100R12 four-wire spiral hoses for 3,800 psi working pressures. Danfoss Power Solutions proposed a more cost-effective solution—a two-wire braided hose that met the same high-pressure requirements while offering greater flexibility and ease of installation.

Unlike spiral hoses, which use parallel steel wire layers in a helical pattern for reinforcement, braided hoses feature an interlocking crisscross pattern. This design provides higher tensile strength and greater flexibility, making it easier to reroute hoses in compact equipment layouts. The braided hoses also help optimize hydraulic performance in electric backhoes where space and weight constraints are critical.

By switching to braided hoses, the OEM could benefit from reduced hose lengths, which further contributes to cost savings and space efficiency—essential in applications where compact machine designs are increasingly necessary.
