Global Dredging Equipment (Mechanical & Hydraulic) Market Forecasts to 2024

The global market for dredgers and dredging equipment touches many diverse applications, ranging from maintaining navigability along the world’s economically critical waterways, to capital development and land reclamation, to environmental protection, and even mining. With so many diverse applications, the global dredging equipment market also benefits from and endures myriad market drivers and stressors.

Making sense of the market as a whole and as a sum of its parts can be confounding. In addition, the majority of operating moderate and large-scale dredge equipment is quickly becoming antiquated. Analysts who follow the industry have been predicting a large-scale equipment upgrade, as global economies have improved over the last decade.

Such a change could lead to a significant boost in global dredge equipment markets. However, even though at least 62% of the global dredge vessel fleet is at least 30 years of age and overdue for update, capital expenditures have not yet materialized. Over the next five years, will we begin to see more significant investment in dredging equipment? Or, balking at conventional trends, will the industry refocus even more strongly on repairing, maintaining, upgrading, and repowering its exiting equipment?

From an applications perspective, much growth over the last decade has focused on capital dredging projects – those large-scale projects that include land reclamation. These projects have brought dredging into the news and the public eye, with high-profile outcomes. However, well over half of the overall global market for dredgers and dredge equipment is utilized outside of this application segment.

Trenching Without the Trench

Installing utility lines underground has proven itself a real money-saver time and again. Underground installation isolates electric, phone, and data cables from damage by wind, falling tree limbs, ice buildup, and other hazards. It’s also much easier on the eye, especially in neighborhoods. But having to dig a trench to bury cables can be an expensive and time-consuming procedure.

With the conventional method, a trench has to be dug, the cable inserted, and the earth that had been dug up put back in the trench and compacted. Having to restore the landscape eats up more time and money. The task becomes even more expensive and time consuming if the utility lines must be routed under existing underground utilities (gas, water, sewer, and other electrical lines), existing roadways, and waterways. These issues are all avoided with trenchless technology, which uses a horizontal directional drill machine to form an underground pilot tunnel for cables and pipes. The machines can even direct the tunnel under and around existing underground obstacles, such as existing utility lines and building foundations.

Theses self-propelled machines use hydraulics for most power functions, such as driving a pair of track-drive motors, a stakedown system, and all boring functions. The stakedown system is necessary to hold the machine in place during boring operations. Without it, the tremendous thrust produced by the hydraulic system to push the drill into the ground could move the entire machine. Once at the work site, an operator need only connect the machine to a source of water, deploy the stakedown system, and begin the underground operations.

Putting a stop to hydraulic leaks

Hydraulic oil leakage is one of the most common hydrocarbon spillages encountered in mining machinery or mining vehicles. Oil spillage on ground leads to contamination of soil and this oil flow can also lead to contamination of nearby water body. Apart from effect on environment, oil leakages also contribute to serious fire and smoke hazard. Components like catalytic purifiers, silencers and other components of exhaust line become extensively hot and even a small amount of oil leak can lead to fire or smoke which can create a threatful situation in underground for operator of mining vehicle and for machine itself. Considering the high price of hydraulic oils, oil leakages and oil spillage also hurts the company on cost front as the oil lost is unrecoverable and could not be given for recycling.

Some of the most effective ways of reducing hydraulic oil leakages are mentioned below.

Hose wrappings

These are widely used to protect hydraulic hoses from any abrasion formed from hoses rubbing against one other or from edges of machine frame. Hose wrappings generally used are made of plastic and is available in different sizes and colours as well for better colour coding of hoses.

Hose sleeves

A hose sleeve can be slipped over the end of the hose assembly and clamped at the ends. These sleeves help in containing the thrust of hose burst protecting the machine and the operator. They also act as a shield for hoses against dirt, dust and sunlight and any external abrasion. Nylon sleeves are commonly used in industry. Hose sleeves also come with option of peel able Velcro lining, facilitating hose replacement without requiring disconnection or removal of hoses. Peel able sleeves can also be used to bundle together set of parallel hoses.
