Description of Cutting Ring Couplings
The purpose of cutting rings is to assure a firm bond between the tube and the coupling. This safe and reliable assembly is obtained by a specific configuration of the cutting ring.
When the nut is being tightened, the ring meets with the internal coupling cone and is distorted, thereby cutting into the tube at points A & B as shown below.
This distortion goes on until C meets with the tube which stops the ring from advancing further and also prevents the ring from cutting through the tube.
This distortion along with the specially designed interior at the coller end D of the ring increases safety with regard to flexing stresses and also eliminates vibration from the cutting area.
After the assembly is completed coller E should completely fill the space in front of the ring.
